Lagos State Government has opened an amnesty window on Planning Permits in the form of a three-month moratorium in penalties on completed buildings without Planning Permits across the State.
A statement issued on Monday by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Engr. Oluwole Sotire, said property owners and developers of existing (completed) developments without Approvals, can obtain Planning Permits, otherwise known as Building Plan Approvals, within the stipulated period of 2nd May to 30th July, 2024 without payment of statutory penalties that usually go with erecting buildings without approval in Lagos State.
The amnesty programme, which is part of measures of the Lagos State Government to cushion the effect of current economic hardships on the built environment sector, also offers additional relief of 5% discount on payments completed within 10 working days during the amnesty period.
Significance
Regulatory Compliance: The amnesty program allows property owners and developers to obtain necessary Planning Permits for completed developments without incurring statutory penalties. This encourages regulatory compliance and legalizes previously unauthorized structures.
Economic Relief: By waiving penalties and offering a 5% discount on payments completed within the first 10 working days of the amnesty period, the program provides financial relief to stakeholders in the real estate sector. This is particularly beneficial given the current economic hardships.
Boost to Real Estate Sector: The initiative could stimulate more activity in the real estate sector as developers and property owners are more likely to invest in and develop properties when regulatory barriers are reduced.
Urban Planning: With more buildings obtaining Planning Permits, the government can have a better overview of the built environment, aiding in urban planning and infrastructure development.
