The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has emphasized that developers must obtain a letter of authorization before initiating construction on any building within the state. Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of LASBCA, made this declaration during the presentation of authorization letters to developers of the Lagos Arena.
According to Oki, the authorization letter is exclusively granted to developers and builders after securing the necessary building/planning permit. This document serves as evidence that LASBCA officials are fully informed about the development and are actively supervising each stage of construction. Alongside the authorization letter, LASBCA issues a green sticker, allowing the agency to conduct inspections at various construction phases.
The primary objective of this process is to ensure that buildings are safe and suitable for occupancy. LASBCA’s professional team, including builders, architects, and engineers, conducts detailed inspections from the foundation to completion. Upon project finalization, the building owner receives a certificate of completion and fitness for habitation.
In addition, Oki cautioned building material producers, particularly block makers, against compromising product quality due to rising cement and reinforcement material costs. Such compromises could negatively impact the structural integrity of newly constructed buildings. He urged the public to adhere to building regulations and invited them to engage LASBCA for ongoing inspections once the authorization letter for construction has been issued
Oki said, “The letter of authorization to commence construction of the building in the state can only be issued to developers and builders after obtaining the necessary building/planning permit and it is a document to show that LASBCA officials are fully aware of the development and are conducting regular supervisions at every stage of the development.”
He disclosed that along with the authorisation letter for construction, LASBCA issued a green sticker, which allows the agency to conduct inspections at various stages of construction.
